First Day, But Make It Confident

(AKA: Help Me Pick My Outfit)

Starting a new job is exciting. Starting a new job after making a career pivot? Exciting and mildly terrifying. 🙃

I’m stepping out of Graphic Design after 20 years and into a Social Media role within Corporate Communications at a large, well-established insurance company. It’s a new lane for me, a new team, and the first time I’ll be meeting the people I interviewed with in real life. So yes — nerves are present. Excitement too. 🎉

But if you’ve talked to any of my girlfriends this week, you already know the real question everyone keeps asking:

“OK but… what are you wearing?”

Because apparently, that matters just as much as the job itself. 😉

Truthfully, getting dressed has always been my comfort blanket. I love dressing up for work. Always have. At nearly every job I’ve held, someone has eventually asked if I’m interviewing somewhere else — which I take as the highest compliment.

My mom and grandma raised me on one golden rule:
Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

Well… I wanted this job. And now that I have it, I plan on showing up like it.

Instead of spiraling over a million outfit options, I’ve narrowed it down to a few tried-and-true formulas that help me feel calm, confident, and like myself — especially on a first day.

faux leather moment Option 1: The Leather Midi Moment

Black faux leather A-line midi skirt
Black knee-high boots
A chunky knit on top — I’m thinking either a bold color or a fun pattern.

This outfit makes me feel instantly pulled together. The leather gives structure, the knit keeps it approachable, and the whole thing feels polished without trying too hard. It’s professional, but still very me.

classic look Option 2: The Classic That Never Fails

Black wide-leg trousers
Booties or pumps
A simple knit or blouse

This is my “I’ve got this” outfit. Timeless, clean, and appropriate for pretty much any professional setting — especially one rooted in credibility and communication. When in doubt, I always come back to this.

red knit set Option 3: Head-to-Toe Color (The Wild Card)

A matching red knit set

love a color moment, and red always makes me feel powerful. That said… the company’s branding leans red, and I can’t decide if this is bold and confident or slightly on-the-nose for Day One. This might be a “save it for later” situation once I’ve found my footing.

Why I Care (More Than I Probably Should)

Clothes won’t do the job for you — but they can help calm the nerves.

For me, the right outfit:
✅ settles the butterflies
✅ gives me confidence before I say a word
✅ helps me walk into a room feeling like I belong there

So when I finally walk in on my first day, I won’t just be thinking about titles or responsibilities — I’ll be carrying my mom and grandma’s advice with me, exactly like I always have.

Now tell me…
Which outfit are you voting for?

One comment on “First Day, But Make It Confident

  1. I’m voting for outfit number 2! Love number 1 and 3 as well, but feel like wait until the weather gets a tad bit warmer for 1 and save 3 for Valentine’s Day because I love theme dressing!
