January always hits the gym like a tidal wave. New memberships. Fuller classes. Treadmills magically becoming scarce. You can feel the “new year, new routine” energy the second you walk in.
And honestly? I don’t mind it.
I already move my body year-round — January just pumps the volume up.
I work out consistently because it keeps me sane, structured, and balanced. But even I feel the difference this month. There’s a buzz. A little extra motivation in the air. And, let’s be real, a lot of cute new workout sets making their debut.
Including mine. 😌
So this week’s post is all about the workout gear that actually helps me stay consistent — not just in January, but all year long. No gimmicks. No pressure. Just the pieces that make showing up easier, smoother, and way more comfortable.
I’ve always believed your workout gear should motivate you. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, showing up feels easier — and that’s exactly why gym days aren’t for old concert tees and baggy sweats anymore.
Leggings That Don’t Betray You
There are two types of leggings in this world:
- The ones you trust, and
- The ones you fight with mid-squat.
I choose option one every time.
What I look for:
- squat-proof 🍑
- high waist that stays high
- medium to high compression
- pockets for phone/earbuds
- thick enough for fluorescent gym lighting (aka Satan’s flashlight)
Where I buy:
- Athleta
- Lululemon
- Fabletics
If they’re cute, comfortable, and don’t budge? They’re in my rotation. I’m also only 5’2″ so a 7/8 length is perfect for me.
Sports Bras That Support Without Suffocating
A good sports bra should hold you together, not hold you hostage. And my DDs know.
My non-negotiables:
- real support
- no shoulder digging
- no uni-boob situation
- cute enough under a loose tank
Bonus points for a strappy look and removable pads.
Sneakers That Match the Workout
Your feet know when you’re wearing the wrong shoes — immediately. I’m pretty much exclusive to Nike and I make sure to size up one full shoe size. Feet swell when you work out. Don’t debate me.
My rotation:
- Running/Walking: cushioned sneakers with a roomy, supportive toe box and stability for my overpronation
- Strength Training: flat, stable soles
- Workout Classes: lightweight, flexible sneakers for all the jumping and twisting
Your body will always thank you for choosing the right pair.
Layers for January Commutes
New England winter requires strategy. I’m not showing up warm on the outside and freezing inside the studio.
My go-tos:
- zip-up hoodies
- cropped pullovers
- sherpa or fleece jackets
- lightweight puffer layers
Warm enough to get me to class. Light enough to peel off without a fight.
Where I Actually Shop for Gear
I shop where the fit works — and I get results.
- Athleta for reliability. Two words: Salutation Stash. They also have the best assortment of sports bras specifically sized for D/DD+.
- Lululemon every once in a while for a good splurge. Their Scuba hoodies are still top tier.
- Fabletics is a great option for bundles – leggings, bra and a top all in one matched set. But beware it is a subscription membership and you’ll need to “skip the month” if you don’t want to be charged regularly.
Bottom line: if it fits well and makes me feel good, it’s a yes.
How I Stay Active Year-Round
January might be the loudest month, but consistency lives in the quiet moments.
Here’s what keeps me moving even when it’s not “new year” season:
- group classes like Body Pump, Spin, and Step Aerobics
- strength training 3–4x/week
- long walks (my favorite reset – I’m a fan of Kirsten Ferguson’s Intention Setting Walks on the Peloton App)
- workout apps for at-home days (Peloton App is my go-to)
- new gear when I need a little push (or see some gains and need to change sizes)
- remembering that two 15 min workouts a week still count (because sometimes life gets to lifing)
Some weeks I’m in a groove. Some weeks I’m just proud I showed up once. Both are wins.
The Cool Down
January might be busy, but it’s also one of the most motivating months. Everyone’s trying. Everyone’s showing up. Everyone’s doing something for themselves.
If a cute set or fresh pair of sneakers is the thing that helps you get out the door? Do it.
Move your body in a way that feels good.
Wear something that makes you excited to show up.
And keep going long after the January crowd thins.
You’ll still be there. 💖
